The Propylaea (Προπύλαια) is the monumental gateway that gives access to the Acropolis of Athens, set on the western side of the sacred rock in central Athens, Greece. Designed by the architect Mnesicles as part of the Periclean building program, it was constructed between 437 and 432 BC in Pentelic marble, in the Doric order, and combines an imposing central stoa (about 24 by 18 metres) with a north wing that once housed the Pinakotheke painting gallery and an unfinished south wing.
